One city, two clusters, short distances

Atlantic City is a compact market. The casinos sit in two groups, along the Boardwalk and up in the Marina district, and the gambling age is 21. For a poker player that geography matters more than any property's decor. If the game you drove for dies at midnight, you can be sitting somewhere else the same night without leaving the city.

That compactness cuts both ways. The player pool is shared, so the same faces circulate, and a bad night in one room is often a bad night across the market rather than a reason to move.

Borgata is the default room

Borgata runs the market-leading poker room in Atlantic City and hosts the city's major tournament series. That is the one venue claim on this page that needs no hedging. If you are travelling for the poker rather than for a weekend away, the calendar you plan around is almost certainly Borgata's.

The practical effect is that the room is deepest when it is also busiest. Series weeks bring the best game selection and the longest waiting lists at the same time. Off-peak weekdays are the reverse: a seat in minutes, and fewer games to choose from.

What genuinely differs between rooms

Table counts and daily schedules change often enough that quoting them is close to useless. These are the things worth asking about, and they are rarely printed anywhere:

Rake percentage, cap, and any extra drop. A jackpot or promotional drop is a separate deduction from the pot and is not usually included when a room quotes its rake.
How the waiting list is run. Call-ahead policies, how long a seat is held, and whether must-move tables feed the main game.
Hours and coverage. Some rooms run around the clock; others open on demand and close when the last table breaks.
Whether the room lives on the series calendar. A room that mainly serves visiting tournament traffic is a very different place in the six weeks between events.

What a tournament entry actually costs

Tournament entries are two numbers added together: the buy-in, which goes into the prize pool, and the fee, which the house keeps. The fee is the cost, and it does not rise in step with the buy-in.

Same building, same dealers, and the entry fee falls from roughly one dollar in six to one in eleven as the buy-in climbs. That is the real argument for playing one larger event instead of three small ones, if the money behind you can stand the swing. Cash games: the rake is the only certainty

In a house game the edge is printed in the pay table. In poker the house takes its rake and steps back, and the rest is decided among the players. You cannot know your win rate against an unfamiliar table, but you can know exactly what the house removes, and it is the number that turns a small edge into no edge at all.

Short sessions tell you nothing about whether you are beating that number. Variance in live poker is large enough that a losing week and a winning week look identical from the inside.
