Where to get help

Every service below was checked in August 2026. Numbers change, and one changed recently enough that most gambling sites still print the old one.

A correction worth making explicitly. 1-800-GAMBLER is no longer the United States national helpline. In September 2025 a New Jersey court returned control of the number to the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, which introduced it in 1983, and it now operates as a New Jersey service. The National Council on Problem Gambling adopted 1-800-MY-RESET as the national line. Both connect you to help; only one is national.

Self-exclusion, and why the national registers are different

Asking one casino to bar you works at that casino. Several countries now run a national register that blocks every licensed operator at once, which is a much stronger instrument and much harder to undo in a bad moment.

The common feature is that they are enforced at the point of entry rather than left to the operator's discretion. Where identification is mandatory, as it is across most of Europe, a register entry is effective immediately and everywhere.

What this site does and does not do

This site publishes the mathematics of casino games. Almost every page ends with the same conclusion, which is worth stating in one place: the house has an edge on virtually every bet, and the edge does not care how you feel about it.

Free odds in craps is the single exception at exactly 0%, and it requires a line bet that carries an edge of its own. Everything else on a casino floor costs money to play over any meaningful length of time.

Where this site carries a commercial link it is disclosed as one, and it never changes what the mathematics says: we do not tell you a system works, because none does. Our martingale entry exists specifically to explain why progression systems trade many small wins for rare catastrophic ones while leaving expectation exactly where it was.

The arithmetic nobody puts on a promotional page

Hold is not the house edge. A craps table with a 1.4% edge typically keeps 12% to 15% of the money brought to it, because the same chips are wagered a dozen times before anyone leaves. Time at the table, not the edge alone, decides what an evening costs.

Variance makes short results meaningless. Winning for an evening on a 5.26% American roulette wheel is completely ordinary and tells you nothing. So does losing for a week while playing correctly. A run of results is a sample, not evidence.

Chasing is the expensive part. Expected loss grows with the number of bets, while a typical swing grows only with its square root. Playing longer to get even makes the expectation worse and the swing relatively smaller, which is the opposite of what it feels like.

Practical limits that actually work

Decide the budget before you arrive and treat it as the cost of the evening, like a ticket. Money you would mind losing does not belong in it.

Set a time limit as well as a money limit. Hold is a function of hours played, so a session length is a more direct control than a stop-loss.

Leave the cards at home. Playing on credit removes the natural stopping point that running out of chips provides, which is exactly what a marker is designed to do.

Use the deposit and loss limits that licensed operators are required to offer. They are set once, when you are thinking clearly, and they hold when you are not.

A rule decided while losing is not a rule. If you find yourself renegotiating a limit mid-session, that is the signal, not the exception.

Signs worth taking seriously

• Gambling with money set aside for something else.
• Returning another day specifically to win back losses.
• Borrowing, selling or hiding to fund it.
• Lying about how much or how often.
• Feeling you have to keep playing to feel normal.
• It has stopped being enjoyable and you are still doing it.

None of these require a crisis to be worth acting on, and the services at the top of this page will talk to anyone at any stage, including people worried about someone else.

Age limits vary more than people expect

21 in the United States, Macau and the Philippines. 18 across most of Europe and Australia. Canada has no federal age at all: 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec, 19 in Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. Malta sets 25 for its own citizens at land-based casinos and 18 for everyone else.
