Where to get help

Every service below was checked against its own website on 12 October 2026. Numbers change. The US national helpline stopped using 1-800-GAMBLER in September 2025, so older pages may still print it.

A correction worth making explicitly. 1-800-GAMBLER is no longer the number of the National Problem Gambling Helpline. In September 2025 a New Jersey court returned control of the number to the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, which introduced it in 1983. The council still runs it, and it still routes callers to help in New Jersey and much of the US. In January 2026 the National Council on Problem Gambling adopted 1-800-MY-RESET as its national number. Both connect you to help. Only 1-800-MY-RESET is the national helpline.

Self-exclusion, and why the national registers are different

Asking one casino to bar you works at that casino. Several countries now run a national register that blocks every operator it covers at once, which is a much stronger instrument and much harder to undo in a bad moment.

The common feature is that the check is required by law before you can play: at the door of casinos and arcades in the Netherlands and Germany, and before any online account opens. How fast an entry starts varies: a Dutch registration through DigiD applies at once, while GAMSTOP says it generally takes up to 24 hours.

What this site does and does not do

This site publishes the mathematics of casino games. Almost every page ends with the same conclusion, which is worth stating in one place: the house has an edge on virtually every bet, and the edge does not care how you feel about it.

Free odds in craps is the one table bet priced at exactly 0%, and it can only be placed on top of a line bet that carries an edge of its own. Almost everything else on a casino floor costs money to play over time.

Where this site carries a commercial link it is disclosed as one, and it never changes what the mathematics says: we do not tell you a system works, because none does. Our martingale entry exists specifically to explain why progression systems trade many small wins for rare catastrophic ones while leaving expectation exactly where it was.

The arithmetic nobody puts on a promotional page

Hold is not the house edge. A pass-line bet at craps costs 1.41%. Yet Nevada's craps tables kept 16.6% of the cash and credit exchanged for chips at the table in the year to August 2026, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. The same chips are bet again and again, and many bets on the layout cost far more than the pass line. Time at the table, not the edge alone, decides what an evening costs.

Variance makes short results meaningless. Winning for an evening on a 5.26% American roulette wheel is completely ordinary and tells you nothing. So does losing for a week while playing correctly. A run of results is a sample, not evidence.

Chasing is the expensive part. Expected loss grows with the number of bets, while a typical swing grows only with its square root. Playing longer to get even makes the expectation worse and the swing relatively smaller, which is the opposite of what it feels like.

Practical limits that actually work

Decide the budget before you arrive and treat it as the cost of the evening, like a ticket. Money you would mind losing does not belong in it.

Set a time limit as well as a money limit. Hold is a function of hours played, so a session length is a more direct control than a stop-loss.

Leave the cards at home. Playing on credit removes the natural stopping point that running out of chips provides, which is exactly what a marker does.

Use the deposit limits that licensed online operators must offer in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. Germany also requires loss limits. They are set once, when you are thinking clearly, and raising one takes time: at least 24 hours in Great Britain and seven days in Germany.

A rule decided while losing is not a rule. If you find yourself renegotiating a limit mid-session, that is the signal, not the exception.

Signs worth taking seriously

• Gambling with money set aside for something else.
• Returning another day specifically to win back losses.
• Borrowing, selling or hiding to fund it.
• Lying about how much or how often.
• Needing to bet more to get the same feeling, or finding it hard to cut down.
• Feeling you have little or no control over it.

None of these require a crisis to be worth acting on, and the helplines at the top of this page will talk to anyone at any stage, including people worried about someone else.

Age limits vary more than people expect

21 in Macau and the Philippines. In the United States each state sets its own age: 21 at New Jersey's casinos, for example, but 18 in Washington, in Florida's card rooms and at some tribal casinos. 18 in Australia and most of Europe, but 21 in Belgium and Estonia. Canada leaves the age to each province: 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec, 19 in Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. Malta sets 25 for its own citizens at its casinos and 18 for everyone else.
