The age depends on the province
There is no federal gambling age in Canada. Each province sets its own, and the split is roughly even.
18: Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec.
19: Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan.
This catches people crossing provincial borders more often than it should. An 18-year-old who can play in Montreal cannot play in Toronto.
Winnings are a windfall, not income
Under paragraph 40(2)(f) of the Income Tax Act, gambling winnings are treated as a windfall: the product of luck rather than a business, and therefore not taxable.
For the overwhelming majority of players that is the end of it. Two qualifications matter. A professional gambler, meaning someone carrying on gambling as a business, is taxed on the profits. And interest earned on winnings once they are banked is ordinary investment income and is taxable.
The line between recreational and professional is decided on the facts and has been litigated. If you are winning consistently and systematically, take advice.

Ages, tax treatment and regulators on this page were checked against legal and regulatory sources in August 2026. On a large result, take proper advice rather than a web page.
