The Casino de Monte-Carlo, open since 1863, and the Casino Café de Paris across the square; the Sun Casino shut in March 2020 and never reopened, and the Monte-Carlo Bay gaming room is closed too. Entry is 18 with a passport, there is a dress code and the salons enforce it, and the rule that surprises everyone is that Monegasque citizens are barred from the gaming rooms of their own principality. Monte Carlo casinos are famous for their formality
- Dress: Jacket recommended for men after 8pm; smart attire is expected (no sportswear, shorts, sandals). The Casino de Monte‑Carlo may refuse entry otherwise.
- ID & Entry: Passport required for entry. Citizens of Monaco are barred by law from gambling inside.
- Table behavior: Be polite, avoid touching chips after bets are called, and expect French/English dealer commands.
Corrected on 16 October 2026: this page said Monaco's residents are barred; the operator's rules bar Monegasque citizens, public employees and its staff, not foreign residents (SBM, Règlement des salles de jeux, article 3).
Checked against Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer's own listing in August 2026, and this page was wrong. Monaco has two casinos, not four. The Sun Casino shut in March 2020 and never reopened; SBM took a €7.5m charge and turned the floor into an events space in November 2022. The Monte-Carlo Bay gaming room is also closed, though the resort is not. Both are now marked closed above instead of recommended.
