Casino Lisboa
Parque das Nações
The city casino sits in Parque das Nações, the riverside district built for Expo 98 and now the most modern part of Lisbon. It is well served by metro and close to the Oriente transport hub, which makes it the easy option if you are staying in the city.
It is a contemporary venue rather than a historic one: gaming floor, restaurants, and a regular programme of live entertainment. The surrounding district, with the oceanarium and the cable car, makes an evening of it.
Casino Estoril
Avenida Dr. Stanley Ho, Estoril · 18 km from Lisbon
Estoril is the serious one. It is 18 km from central Lisbon and 20 km from the airport, reachable in about half an hour by train along the coast, and it bills itself as the largest casino in Europe.
The building is a destination in its own right, combining gaming with concerts, shows, exhibitions and dining. The address gives away its ownership: Stanley Ho, the Macau casino magnate whose group holds it.
Its place in cultural history is genuine. Ian Fleming spent time at Estoril during the Second World War, when neutral Portugal was thick with intelligence operatives, and the casino is generally credited as the inspiration for Casino Royale.
Practical notes
The legal age is 18 and photo identification is required at both venues. Portuguese casinos enforce registration properly.
Dress is smart casual, with Estoril stricter in the main gaming rooms than the slot areas.
Portugal taxes gambling at the operator rather than the player for casino games, so a recreational win generally arrives whole. Rules differ for professional gambling and for other products; take advice on a large result.
The coastal train from Cais do Sodré runs late and is the sensible way to reach Estoril. It is a pleasant journey along the water and removes any question of driving afterwards.
Before you go
Two things are worth reading whatever the city. Our house edge entry explains why games that look alike are frequently priced very differently, and hold explains why a 1.4% edge produces a much larger loss across a visit.
Set a budget before you sit down and treat it as the cost of the evening. Our responsible gaming page covers limits and self-exclusion.
