One town, two jurisdictions
Stateline is named for what it is. Nevada licenses commercial casinos and California does not, so the properties line up on the Nevada side of the boundary and stop where it does. The town on the California side, South Lake Tahoe, shares the lake, the ski traffic and the road, and has no gaming floor.
The age follows the same line. Nevada is 21, as is every US casino jurisdiction. Visitors from Europe, where 18 is the norm, are the ones most often caught by it, and photo ID is checked rather than assumed.
The names in circulation are out of date
Two of the Stateline properties have changed hands and names in recent years, and the lists you will find have not all caught up. We are not publishing a current roster here, because the sources available to us disagree with each other about which name belongs to which building today, and a confident wrong answer is worse than none.
What is safe to say: the cluster is small, walkable and all within a few hundred metres of the state line, so arriving and looking is a reliable strategy in a way it would not be in a city. Confirm the current name of anywhere you intend to book directly with the property.
What the tables cost
Nevada floors are American floors, and two decisions matter more than the choice of room:
- Roulette: the double-zero wheel is standard and costs 5.26% on every bet. Where a single-zero wheel is offered, usually at a higher minimum, it costs 2.70% for the same game.
- Blackjack: 6:5 is widespread on US floors and costs 1.35 percentage points against 3:2, more than every other rule difference combined. This is the number to check before sitting.
- Craps: the pass line costs 1.4141%, and free odds behind it are the only wager in the building priced at zero.
Practical notes
- 21 with photo ID. The line is enforced at the door and on the floor.
- Tahoe is a two-season destination, and the casinos are the part that does not close. Ski traffic in winter and lake traffic in summer both fill the same small cluster.
- Altitude is real here: the lake sits above 1,800 metres and a long session at that height is not the same as one at sea level.
