The tax rule worth knowing
Czech law taxes gambling winnings one type of game at a time: betting, machine games, table games (cash poker included), tournaments and other games are each tested separately. If your winnings from one type, minus your stakes on it, come to more than CZK 50,000 in a calendar year, the whole of that net is taxed as income, at 15% (23% on any part of a year's total taxable income above 36 times the average wage). Up to CZK 50,000 it is exempt, and a loss on one type cannot be set against a win on another.
It is calculated on the year's net, not per win, which makes it materially different from a withholding regime. The threshold was CZK 1,000,000 until the end of 2023 and has been CZK 50,000 since 1 January 2024. Your country of residence may also tax the same money, and whether relief is available depends on the treaty.
